Viral $500 Wedding
Kiara Brokenbrough—who died during childbirth on March 30, 2026—went viral in 2022 for documenting her budget-friendly wedding to Joel Brokenbrough. In fact, she spent only $500 on their nuptials, including a $47 gown for the occasion.
“Our goal was to just be as minimal as possible,” the influencer told Good Morning America at the time. “And to spend the least amount of money as possible.”
“You have a wedding, with witnesses there to witness you, vowing to your spouse, vowing to God that you guys are going to stay together for life,” she emphasized. “And then you celebrate with food, drinks and dance. And that’s exactly what we did.”

A Glimpse Into Her Marriage
Kiara shared how she and Joel prioritize each other despite their busy schedules, including intentional dating.
“Dating isn’t just for getting to know someone (there are other ways to do that), it’s for reconnecting with your spouse,” she wrote on Instagram in January 2025. “Dating is a powerful cure to the ‘roommate’ phase that marriages journey through.”
“Both my husband and I need to see each other putting forth effort in our appearance & looking our best more often & date days/nights give you that opportunity,” she added. “Dating gives us a chance to reconnect, unwind from life’s stresses, and get a much-needed dopamine boost!”

Living Her Dreams
Ahead of her 2025 graduation, Kiara shared insights into her career endeavors in digital marketing, including a presentation she gave on social media and content creation.
“As many of you know, going back to school wasn’t part of my plan, but I truly believe it was part of God’s plan for my life,” she captioned her April 2025 vlog. “Even though I’m still in the process of earning my degree, this opportunity brought everything full circle.”

The Basketball (Wife’s) Diaries
The content creator documented her traveling with Joel and West Virginia State University’s basketball team during their 2025 season.
“I have been taking y’all along with me as my husband experiences his first year coaching at a collegiate level,” she explained in a March 2025 Instagram vlog. “Being a coach’s wife is a very special privilege, but it does come with great responsibility.”
“Coaching in general is a ministry,” she continued. “You get the opportunity to meet so many people and impact their lives through the realm of sports. As his wife, you get a front-row seat to that. You are also impacting these players’ lives. I’m so proud of our players. I’m so proud of my husband.”

A Turned Tassel
Kiara announced in May 2025 that she had graduated from the University of Southern California with a master’s degree in digital media management.
“I hit the ground running,” she wrote on Instagram. “1.5 years of classes w/little to no breaks! & this summer I’ll officially earn my master’s degree w/ a 4.0.”
With Joel having earned his Bachelor of Science, the couple had celebrated their milestone with a joint graduation party alongside their loved ones.

The Best of Friends
Before Kiara and Joel moved from California to West Virginia for the coach’s latest opportunity, the couple spent quality time with their loved ones as they packed up their lives.
“In the midst of all that,” Kiara said in an August 2025 Instagram video, “I got to spend time with all of the people that I love and soak in as much time with them as I can before we go.”

A Slamdunk Pregnancy Surprise
More than one month before Kiara’s devastating passing, she shared how she told Joel that she was pregnant with the help of a Wendy’s meal.
“I am about to tell my husband that I’m pregnant. I’m getting ready to meet him at his job,” she explained in a February 2026 Instagram video. “I was trying to figure out all these ways to tell him. I was looking up stuff really quickly and I’m, ‘He ain’t gonna care.’ He’s such a simple guy.”
“I told him I was going to get him something to eat,” she continued. “He loves a biggie bag from Wendy’s and I’m just gonna put the test in there.”
As he sat in the car with Kiara while eating his lunch, he realized that there were multiple positive pregnancy tests in the bag. With a smile on his face, the assistant basketball coach exclaimed, “Oh my God! I’m nervous. That’s why you was recording it?”

An Unimaginable Loss
Following the news that Kiara had died while welcoming her and her husband’s son Jonah on March 30, 2026, Joel paid tribute to his wife while giving an update on their baby’s health.
“I never imagined I would be writing this, especially so soon. It has taken me time to begin processing what has happened and to make sense of it all,” he wrote on Facebook. “In the midst of this profound loss, our son, Jonah, entered the world in a truly miraculous way.”
“He is currently in the NICU,” he continued, “fighting each day, and we are grateful to share that he is making progress.”
