Influencer Lindsay Dewey’s Infant Son Dies in Mirror Accident

Influencer Lindsay Dewey’s 22-Month-Old Son Dies After Mirror Falls on Him

Lindsay Dewey is detailing a heartbreaking event in order to help others.

The influencer—who chronicles her life with her family on social media—recently shared that her and husband Eric Dewey‘s 22-month-old son Reed died after a large, leaning mirror in their home fell on top of him.

“To make a long story short, apparently Reed had one of his suction cup bowls and stuck it on the mirror and was pulling it ‘back and forth’ to pry it off (we’re assuming) and he pulled the mirror down on himself,” she wrote on an Instagram Story highlight titled “awareness” on her profile. “I never even heard him playing by/ with the mirror. Until I heard it fall and then within 5 seconds I lifted it off of him.”

Lindsay went on to explain how the mirror was “heavy duty” and leaned against the wall, noting there was “no way” her kids were strong enough to move it or pull it down which is why she and her husband hadn’t felt “urgency to anchor it” to the wall. She later added the instructions for the mirror don’t require it to be anchored, but that it is an option.

“The second I lifted it up I looked at him to see if he was ok and he was laying there eyes open but not crying and I felt relieved thinking he must’ve been okay just in shock or something …but no… he was not the Reed I knew,” Lindsay’s message continued. “Based on how he was acting, I immediately knew something was VERY wrong and that it was serious but never did we expect it to be so serious that he wouldn’t survive it. The mirror hit his head in the most precise way and fractured his skull – obviously causing a severe TBI.[traumatic brain injury]”

Ultimately, Reed passed away despite receiving medical care.

“I replay it in my mind too often,” Lindsay said, adding on behalf of her and Eric, “We both are still in complete shock that this is what took our baby from us. We’re only sharing this because we don’t want this happening to anybody. A few close people we’ve told literally started naming off items in their house that weren’t anchored, and it hit home for them because they literally could’ve been in our situation.”

Lindsay explained the accident happened in what she described as a “perfect storm,” including a chair that is usually in front of the mirror having been moved after their dog—who is usually not in the living room—peed on the carpet.

She also noted she’s already “that psycho protective mom,” who has child locks on windows, gates, doors, has child monitors installed, and dressers anchored to walls, adding, “So it hurts even more when it happens to a family (us) who tries so hard to protect our kids.”

The mom explained why she and Eric also decided to share their experience despite deciding to keep it private initially.

“You have no clue how easy it would be to keep this to ourselves and protect our hearts from the potential backlash especially from strangers,” she admitted. “But I truly couldn’t keep it from other parents anymore. But truly I shared this only for awareness purposes. If I’m being honest, after discussing it a week ago, we decided that we were not going to share it. But we had a change of heart and I’m glad. This could potentially save another child and that makes all the backlash worth it.”
